Red Bordeaux and Red Meritage wines are produced from a blend of up to five varietal grapes. The two major grapes used are Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and used to a lesser amount are Cabernet Franc, Malbec and/or Petit Verdot. The most prized Red Bordeaux come from the Medoc communes of Margaux, St-Julien, Pauillac, and St-Estephe in Bordeaux, where the wines are ranked into growths, from First Growth, the highest rating, down to the Fifth Growth.
