The story of Selby Winery is one rich in cultural and familial history. It was founded in 1994 by Susie Selby and her father Dr. David K. Selby. Dr. Selby- a Vietnam vet, marble sculptor and spinal surgeon- traveled around the world, fostering an appreciation for vintage wine. Trips to Europe would result in Selby’s first blends of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Meanwhile Susie gained eclectic winemaking experience of her own. She began as a tasting room manager at Rabbit Ridge Winery, then worked her way up to Cellar Master then Assistant Winemaker while still developing blends for Selby Winery. Susie, her father, and her mother Nancy would enjoy trips through wine country together, exploring the rich options the region had to offer. Dr. Selby passed away in 1997, but Susie has since continued to bring their winery to life. She is the sole owner and operator to this day.
Operating without partners or investors and offering a whopping 16 varietals, Selby Winery has become one of the most distinguished success stories in the wine world. Their wine has been served in the White House across the Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations, and to celebrities like Robert Redford, Sheryl Crow and Debbie Allen. Selby Winery is located in downtown Healdsburg, California, lending a unique landscape to this unique winery. “Healdsburg is the greatest place in the world to live,” Susie said. “It’s an amazing combination of art, science and nature.”
Susie’s motto is simple: “Enjoy wine; Enjoy life.”
Selby Winery is open daily 11 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. For more information, visit their website.
