Port Information
Port is an aged wine that is produced by the blending of many vintage years, of several varieties of red grapes, and fortified with clear brandy. Ports are handcrafted using century-old methods. Ruby Port undergoes minimal aging and is dark and sweet. Tawny Port is aged for many years (as long as 30 or more), and is light and soft. There are many other classifications of Port, depending on the types of grapes used and the amount of time they are aged. Vintage Port is the most expensive, and is only made in very good years. In Vintage Ports, all of the grapes will come from only one vintage and from the top vineyards in the best parts of the Douro. Older Ports must be decanted, as they contain a large amount of sediment due to the many years in the bottle during the aging process. Only Ports produced in Portugal can truly be named Port, but the same processes are used to produce similar wines in other parts of the world, including the United States.
